Week 7 : Part 2

I watch the Lily's 'Asian influenced salad', Aey's 'Spider', and Long's 'How to add ram to a laptop'

From Asian influenced salad I learned about making soy dressing for salad with olive oil. It's not familiar but looks so nice. I usually add the soy sauce for making salty because I prefer to use a lot of sesame oil. I really like this combination which is soy sauce and sesame. Anyway, I'm gonna try to add a olive oil instead of sesame oil.

The short movie,'Spider',was shocking. A man tried to release his girlfriend's anger so he treated 3 piece of chocolate and did a naughty thing which is hiding a toy spider. After the girlfriend found and was surprised, she gets out of car and was hit by car to avoid the toy spider threw to her by him. It's was amazing. I really recommend many men learn to solve the problem without doing foolish thing.

For the last one, I watched the 'How to add ram to a laptop'. I've known if I wanted to add some chip in a laptop, I should disjoint. But it doesn't need. There is a door to add some ram easily. It's was really useful information for me.

Week 6 : Task 2 Mushroom Farm

<http://videos.howstuffworks.com/discovery-health/37226-lyon-in-the-kitchen-mushroom-farm-video.htm>

1. Summary

I watched about mushroom farm. The farmer's name was Fred Ellrot and his farm's name was F&F Farms.
Mushroom likes cool and moist so he should keep temperature down and humidity up.
He grows the 2 variety of mushroon ; one is the shiitake and the other is oyster mushroom. The shiitake is grown on natural oak log and the oyster mushroom is grown on black plastic bag. These mushroom is specialty mushrooms and have a earty and woody flavor.

2. Opinion

It was interesting. I didn't see that kinds of process. To growing from the black plastic bag isn't familiar for me. And it was good chace to know the name of mushrooms. I didn't know the exactly what it is even though I've eaten a lot of times even today. I was curious about why that mushroom's name is oyster. What's the origion of name?

3. Vocab
earty flavor - first and foremost as those that might come with a bit of actual dirt at the farmers market — vegetables like leeks, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, turnips and dainty radishes that still bear the evidence that they were once rooted to the earth, not bred in a laboratory or sterilized in a packaging plant in a remote town.

Week 6 : Task 1 - Long term memory

1. 1st video - "Long term memory"
1) Def. - like file in a computer, books in library.
2) Procedural memory : memory of doing sth e.g.) baking a cake
3) Declarative - episodic memory(key moment of life), semantic memory(knowledge)

2. 2nd video - " 4 ways to help long term retrieval"
1) Repeat, Recite, Review
2) Distributive Practice
3) Serial Postion Effect
4) Similaritics & Differences

3. Useful video
: The second vidoe was helpful for me because it explain in terms of order. It was more organized and clear. In contrast, the first one was very uncertain and made me not to be concentrated in information.

4. What I'm usally do to remember
: I usually do recite before I take a test. I tried to recite like professor did in the class. It really help to find key point, to predict the question ,and to remeber for a long time.

5. To improve my memory technique
: Due to the second video, I might add the distributive practice on note-taking. It helps to memorize efficiently.

6. New vocab
retrieval n) the process of getting something back from somewhere

Week5 : Task 2 - Food, Inc.

I found the director's interview about Food, inc in PBS. It was already published to book and it continue to show. The director said the system of food made people sick and that hid the truth of food. We can see easily cheaper hamburger, pizza, snack etc than fruit and vegetable. It forces the lower income family to buy unhealthy food. Then, they are exposed to many disease such as diabetes and obesity. It is astonishing fact. The adevent of gigantic food company led to recent mechanism of food industy. The poor people are, the more they become to buy low quality food. I really want to watch this movie. It impressed me and remind the environment and oppression of big yourcompany. Buy local food and Keep health !

Week 5 : Task 1 - The Flavor of Seoul

The Flavor of Seoul
Travel, Choice Tables: Seoul by Matt Gross & Fritzie Andrade July20, 2008

I chose this video after I scrutinized the web site of NYtimes video.
I was a little suprised for finding a video about Korea. And it talks about Korean food!
What a nice subject! It's not robot science. Those reason deserve to watch.

Summary :

The editor visited Seoul, Korea and tried to eat original operating food.
Seoul is the South Korea's capital. There is awesome place to it.
Korean food is amazingly vary ; grilled fish, noodle stew, quick snack, kimchi
There are many innovative food.
They visited the Myeong-dong and Noryangjin. In Myeong-dong they tried to eat non-Korean spaghetti with ice cream corn and in Noryangjin tried to eat Hoe which is called Sashimi in U.S.
Noryangjin is the main seafood market in Seoul. One editor was surprised the number of food which comes with whatever customers order and live octopus.
Some people those spaghetti and live octopus are strange but for him those are just flavor of sort.

Vocab :

- innovative adj) (of a product, idea, etc.)featuring new methods; advanced and original
(There are many innovative food.)
(The store's products are innovative and effective.)
Opinion :

I watched this video at 11p.m. I was so hungry while I was watching and also I missed the authentic Korean food especially Hoe. In Korea I can eat cheap fresh raw fish. The quality is good comparing to price.
Like editor's narration some food seem odd for foreigners but if you tried that, you wouldn't to say again and you even might be like that. I'm sure. Specially, if you like spicy food, you should try Korean food. It might be your flavor I guess.

Try authentic Korean food when you'll visit Korea or everywhere.

Week 4 : Task 2 - Monk Santa

I like monk. He is the main character in drama. He was a police officer but since his wife died for car cashing by someone who tried to kill Mr. Monk, his disease,OCD(obessive compulsive disorder) and many kinds of phobia, become intensified thus he couldn't work anymore.
He is so funny. Maybe you can guess how he do generally. He likes really really organizing everyting even size of whole bread.
In this scene he's looking suspect while disguising a santa. But he told his sorrow to kids. What are you doing Monk?! You should tell good something to kids!!

Week 4 : Task 1 - Saved by th Sun

I watched the 'Saved by the Sun'. This video are about solar power. It talks about how our realization of environment really are, how to process the solar panel and why solar power is the solution of future energy source by showing many model of using.

1. Introduction
  • Fissile fuel causes the global warming. So we need to revolutionize source of energy. The answer is the solar power. This power is from revising solar energy.
  • Using solar energy starts from gas crisis.
  • But the cost of usages and setting is an expensive than electricity can get. Though the cost isn't efficient, there is innovated business models.

2. Solar power

1) Larry Kazmerski (U.S. Department of Energy, National Renewable Energy Laboratory)is the person who introduced the solar energy to U.S. , make white house use solar panel at the time of Jimmy Carter president. He is a solar optimist so he has been collecting a solar history for instance the portable solar power radio which is created in 1958.

2) Process of solar cell

solar panel consists like sandwich. The top is protection, bottome is the base, and the middle is palce maded of sillicon to act. When it is exposed to sunlight, the solar cell move active and the each cell seperate due to confiuration of sillicon. And it move along the strip then it feeds to the electricity of house.

cf) current model is more benefit that can generate twice much electricity than earlier model, cheaper, easy to live with it and don't need battery.

  • Bill & Debbi Lord - they are passionate advocates of solar power. In basement, there is a power generation. And they use the solar hot water penel to keep warm under the floor. They pay nothing cause of net metering that if they produce excessive electricity than they need then the electricity company gives them credits. So they $7.47 per month though. It is hooked up to the power company.

3) Importance of solar power

  • It's not popular because it's too expensive. It requires to owe $50,000 to install. Thus just few wealth people can afford.
  • But why is it important ? A solar power is just not a meaning of payback but for environment. Over last 11 years, 70 tons CO2 haven't been put into the atmosphere as we have been using a solar power.
  • A fossil fuel produces 40% of CO2 everyday. It is a major cause of global warming(Green house effect). Co2 absorbs heat and increases the surface temperature. It's a sever problem. It results in climate change such as flood, drought, melt ice, hurricane, unusaul disasters and also boost unexpected phenomeon.
  • In California July 5, 2006, there was a huge block off. A great manager is needed to control and predict homw many we need to electricity. But in that summer, 13 million people use air conditonal so they needed more electricity than usual. After then, then couldn't generate adequate amounts finnally blocked off.
  • Once start to warm and melt ice, it's difficult to rever those trends. By th time we really know that terrific, it's too late. That's why carbon free solar power is the solution.

3. Obstacle

1) the price

  • California - there is a larest solar plant in the world. It's a Kramer Junction which is bigger then NewYork Central Park and made 20 years ago. The key of this plant is solar penel's shape. They don't use flat roof panel, use cured one can continue to generate electricity regardless as time by changing of angle according to time to fit best condition to be exposed to sunlight.

  • The problem is hard to find the place make a plant. To build a plant needs huge land so the plant is only desert. It's a critical limitation. But the far the plant from city using the electricity the more expensive to transmit the electricity.

2) limitation to generate

  • The sun doens't always shine. It means impossible to generate all days. And also some place has a proper condition like California.

4. Role model

1) Germany

  • Germany is the country to solar power and moe renewable energy. They pronounce to increase the rate of using renewable energy to 20% of entire usage by 2020 even 30%.
  • They encouragne to use solar energy, person who puts up the solar panel can get 50cents per one killowatt hour for electricity, opposite person who buys electricity to pay 20cents thus the solar panel owner get benefits. e.g) big farmer -> power producer(income $500.,000~600,000 per year)
  • German accept to pay higher price of electricity than other country because they know that costs contribute to clean directly for future.
  • Now Germany is the world leader solar producing. As consequence of that, they produce tremendous job and contribute to decrease the solar panel price.
  • Within next two decades wind generators and solar panels could be providing one third of country's electricity. In contrast, U.S. generates 1% from solar and wind and there are no movements for encouraging use of solar energy like Germany.

2) Whole Food in New Jersey

  • The roof is covered by solar panel. They don't pay for them, they're owned by solar company, Sonedison for 20 years. It uses everywhere like lightening, steamer, freezer, cooler and even register.F
  • Even if the panel generates 15% of total electricity but that energy is produced when the price of electricity is the most expensive, peek hour, so it's more cheaper than fossil fuel.
  • Business can make difference and the solution of capitalism which build on by U.S. is using renewable energy like solar power.

5. Future

  • improve efficiency - flexible solar sheet. It's a more powerful and efficient. A flat solar sheet usually absorbs 15~20%, it blocks the other spectrum except red spectrum. But the more sophisticating flexible sheet has extra layer absorbing the other spectrum. It's used to Robot which worked in Mars. Even though it generates more energy, it owes much money
  • Nano-paint - it's on development though. it's a cheap like people can buy at Home Depot and easy to put up.
  • Solar industry is fast growing source of energy ; 10% per year
  • 2 billion people in the world have little or no access to get great electricity. Solar energy will provide opportunity them of education and society modernize.
  • It's debatable the target to improve usage rates of renewable energy to 20~30%. We're using 1% currently.
  • An established thing is too late to do anything about it after 20years.

6. New vocab

  • passionate adj) showing or caused by strong feelings or a strong belief

(They are passionate advocates of solar power.)(He's passionate about football.)

  • advocate n) a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause or policy
  • hooked up Phr.v) to connect sb/sth to a piece of electronic equipment, to a power supply or to the Internet

(It is hooked up to the power company.)(Check that the computer is hooked up to the printer.)

  • generate v) to produce or creat sth

(U.S. generates 1% from solar and wind and there are no movements for encouraging use of solar energy like Germany.)(We need someone to generate new ideas.)

7. My opinion

I chose this video becasue I'm interested in solar energy. I have a small solar panel in house in Korea, though. I didn't know how it process and how can I get a electricity. I knew just a surface benefit of solar energy. By watching this video I leanred about Germany's good friendly environment policy. They are such a great country to effort to keep green earth instead of us. And also the hugh U.S. just generates 1% renewable energy shocks to me. How could they do? They are the biggest country to use tremendous fossil energy. Evne though they owe cheaper than others. It's a good for me frankly but it's not fair. They should be incharge of environmental preservation. By the way, it was a little bit typical topic but it teaches deeply.

:D Who am I ?

Hi.!! Welcome to Hyojin's blog.

My name is Hyojin Lee. I'm from Daegu, Republic of Korea(South Korea). I can speak two types Korean, standard Korean and local dialect. Now I'm in Seattle since last Dec 5. I can remeber the day I just arrived at(I don't believe I can exactly the day cause I'm a little bit trouble to remeber the date). I'm studying at Seattle Central Community College now. Actually I already got in university in Korea, but I decided to restart at U.S.
I wasn't satisfied the quality of education on my previous university so I came here to study. I used to think the achievement depends on how I did. But because of my major was Economics, I needed to go somewhere to get more lastly information. The knowledge of economy has been changing very fast. That's why I chose to come U.S. than other countries.
Actually I'm not familiar with economy but I'm interested even though I didn't read a newspaper every morning(but I've tried ASSP). My dream is to run department store so I chose Economics to my major. Frankly it wasn't a serious thing for me when I started to say my dream to others. But the more I said, the bigger I wanted to be. After then I followed my dream and I came here even Seattle.
Before I did new adventure, I hesitated a little. However, finally I did now I'm here, right? Let's start to study. Although I'm struggling that reading new academic vocab, people don't understand my pronounciation and I can't laugh right scene while watching drama, comedy show etc. I believe I can get over and can communicate without asking to repeate again or say slowly.
I'm really happy meet you guys at SCCC. I'm ready to get along with you. I'm good person(It sounds strange, though). Thank you for visiting my blog.
